Video interview with Alya Al-Sultani
Alya Al-Sultani is a vocalist and composer who grew up in Tottenham, London, as the daughter of parents who had fled Iraq. She talks to sister-hood about the immigrant experience, the importance of music in her life, and the difficulties of criticising injustices in Muslim communities within an atmosphere of increasing right-wing hate. She discusses the power of art, the legacies of war in the Middle Eastern region, and the responsibility of artists to speak out for those who aren’t able to do so.
sister-hood staff
sister-hood is a digital magazine, providing Muslim women with a platform to speak for themselves, rather than being spoken to, spoken for, or spoken about.
